Prescription Weight Loss Medications
There is a huge unmet medical need for safe and effective non-surgical treatments for obesity. Weight loss medications have had a perilous history over the centuries, culminating in a small range of approved weight loss medications available internationally and an even smaller range of approved weight loss medications in New Zealand. I will review the difficulties in designing effective compounds to target obesity from a research perspective and the efforts underway to overcome these. The move to combination treatments will be highlighted, and current obesity treatment guidelines with clear medication stopping rules will be reviewed. A few case histories will be presented in the context of our national weight management guidelines for discussion.
