Updates On Chest Procedures And When (Not) To Do Them
Picture
Placement of an intercostal chest drain is a common medical procedure used in a variety of clinical settings, including by those working in a generalist area.  It is not an benign procedure and does carry significant risks such as pain and internal injury.  The purpose of this presentation is to provide an update on the recent evolving evidence around the use of pleural procedures.  It will focus on the increased use of conservative therapy for primary spontaneous pneumothorax, the variety of procedural approaches now available for symptomatic malignant pleural effusion, and the utility of bedside ultrasound in the management of pleural disease.
