Dr Stephen Child joined Southern Cross Health Society as Chief Medical Officer in December 2017.
A Canadian-trained General Physician with a respiratory interest, Stephen came to New Zealand in late 1991. He continues once weekly private clinics and is a consultant within the Department of General Medicine at Auckland DHB. He also has a strong passion for medical education and has authored or co-authored more than 50 articles on medical workforce and medical education.
Stephen was elected to the Medical Council of New Zealand and took up his position for a 3-year term from July 2018. In past roles, he has been involved in junior doctor training and their working conditions. Until 2018 he was also Auckland DHB’s Director of Clinical Training. Other former roles include: Chair of the New Zealand Medical Association, DHB National Workforce Strategy Group member, the Minister of Health’s Medical Training Board member, Northern Clinical Training Network board member and Health Workforce New Zealand Clinical Advisor.
