Dr Rupert Bird is a Consultant Psychiatrist working with Bay of Plenty District Health Board. He qualified in medicine from Cardiff, Wales, then completed his higher training in the Midlands of England before migrating to New Zealand 23 years ago. He has worked in a variety of mental health settings, including Forensic and Substance Misuse Services. He has an interest in the therapeutic use of cannabis, particularly for those who experience Tourettes Syndrome.

This talk will discuss the pharmacology, history and socio-political aspects of cannabis use, the potential therapeutic benefits to some, and adverse effects to others. It will describe consequences of variations in the mechanisms of present state control, and offer alternative approaches to regulating therapeutic cannabis use.
